Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) was alive with excitement on Saturday, 27 September, as the official opening of Ted Prior’s Grug: A Retrospective Exhibition drew record numbers of visitors. Families, longtime fans, and members of the local community came together to celebrate the lasting legacy of one of Australia’s most beloved children’s characters.

The day was made even more memorable with the attendance of Grug’s creator, author and illustrator Ted Prior, who warmly greeted visitors and signed treasured copies of his books. Guests also enjoyed a lively program of activities, from Grug-inspired craft making in the Makers Space to interactive installations, such as leaving notes in Grug’s letterbox. Celebratory bubbles, generously provided by Lisa McGuigan Wines, added to the festive atmosphere.

As the first gallery to host this landmark retrospective, PACC is honoured to present an in-depth look at Ted Prior’s creative practice. The exhibition features original artworks, early sketches, storyboards, and rare publications that not only chart Grug’s evolution since his 1979 debut but also highlight Prior’s broader career as an illustrator and educator.

This free exhibition runs until 15 November 2025, giving visitors plenty of time to experience the charm, humour, and gentle wisdom that have made Grug a cherished part of Australian storytelling. Whether you’re reliving childhood memories or discovering Grug for the first time, the exhibition offers a chance to step into a world of imagination that continues to delight audiences of all ages.
