A true legend of the local swimming community, Ellena Morris OAM has been officially inducted into the City of Cessnock Hall of Fame, recognising her extraordinary contribution to the sport and her unwavering commitment to inclusion and opportunity for all.
For decades, Mrs. Morris has been a tireless advocate for athletes with intellectual disabilities, dedicating her time, passion, and expertise to ensuring that swimming is a sport where everyone can thrive. Her deep love of swimming has not only shaped her career but has left a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals across the region and beyond.
Ellena’s recognition comes in honour of her long-standing involvement with Special Olympics Australia, where she served as a national swimming classifier — a role vital in ensuring fair and equitable competition for athletes of all abilities. In addition, she made history as the Head Australian Aquatics Coach at the 2013 Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games, helping lead a generation of athletes to international success.
Her work has broken down barriers, inspired fellow coaches and volunteers, and created pathways for swimmers who may otherwise have been overlooked.
In celebrating her induction, Mayor of Cessnock Daniel Watton said:
“It is wonderful to formally recognise and celebrate the many important achievements of this remarkable member of our community.”
Mrs. Morris’s name now joins an esteemed list of local figures whose dedication and excellence have shaped the Cessnock region. Her story stands as a shining example of how one person’s commitment can ripple through a community, empowering others and fostering a legacy of inclusion, dignity, and sporting excellence.
The City of Cessnock is proud to honour Ellena Morris OAM — not just for her accolades, but for the spirit of generosity, integrity, and perseverance she represents.
Congratulations, Ellena — and thank you.
