Mr Stink set to wow young audiences this school holidays
Published on 24 March 2023
Look out Cessnock – something stinky is heading your way this April school holidays! Adapted for the stage by Australian writer Maryam Master, and based on David Walliams’ award-winning book of the same name, MR STINK comes to life on stage at Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) on Wednesday 19 April for two shows.
Young fans of the book will be familiar with the story. Chloe – who is bullied at school and lives in the shadow of her high-achieving sister at home – finds a friend in Mr Stink, a homeless man who shows her kindness and teaches her a thing or two about dealing with bullies. When Mr Stink needs a place to stay, Chloe hides him in the garden shed – but is there more to Mr Stink than Chloe first thought…?
Independent theatre production house and touring company CDP Kids are no stranger to producing high-quality live theatre experiences for younger audiences, with sell-out national and international tours of shows such as The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The 13/26/52/78 & 91-Storey Treehouse under their belt.
The production is directed by Jonathan Biggins, best known to PACC audiences from performances in Wharf Review and The Gospel According To Paul. Biggins says the appeal of the show is its capacity to entertain both kids and adults alike with a story about family that doesn’t preach.
“It is very much a family show. We pitch it across to the parents because parents need to be engaged too”.
Themes of social justice, homelessness, bullying, prejudice, and family relationships are approached with generous humour and heart.
“There are lots of moral lessons told in a funny, non-sanctimonious way, in a children’s way, with scatological humour and other things that engage kids,” says Biggins.
MR STINK will be at Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) for two shows on Wednesday 19 April at 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Tickets are on sale at the PACC Box Office, by phone on 02 4993 4266 or online at mypacc.com.au.
