Coal Street: exploring perceptions of past, present and future in the Hunter Valley

Join interdisciplinary artist and educator, Emma Florence May for an interactive workshop exploring how people perceive the changing landscapes of the Hunter Region as it transitions from coal mining to new possibilities. Through creative expression, participants will create their own ‘Coal House’ – a personal reflection on identity, sense of place, and the connection between past, present and future.

Together, we’ll ask: what does living in a coal-producing place mean to you? How does a transition landscape shape your sense of belonging? What future do you want for the Hunter?

These individual creations will come together as the Coal Street—a much larger powerful collective artwork that tells the story of our shared past, present, and imagined futures. This will be later exhibited in galleries and public spaces across the Hunter.

  • Ages: Year 8 and above (14-18 years-old)
  • All materials will be provided; but participants are encouraged to bring along items that represent their past, present and hopes for the future that will be incorporated into their individual coal houses.
  • All artworks will be returned to participants following their exhibition (venue and dates TBC)
