Ted Prior's Grug
Exhibition Open 20 September - 15 November
Once the top of a Burrawang tree fell to the ground. Then the grassy top began to change. It became Grug!
The 'Grug Retrospective' exhibition celebrates the enduring legacy of Ted Prior's beloved children's character, Grug, who has captivated audiences since his creation in 1979. This exhibition offers a comprehensive journey through Grug's evolution, from his origins in Prior's picture books to his adaptation into acclaimed theatrical productions by Windmill Theatre Company.
Ted Prior, an Australian author and artist, introduced Grug as a curious creature resembling the fallen top of a Burrawang tree. Grug's adventures, depicted in a series of books published between 1979 and 2020, explore simple yet profound themes that resonate with young readers. The character's charm lies in his inquisitive nature and the creative ways he navigates the world around him.
In collaboration with Windmill Theatre Company, Grug's stories were transformed into engaging stage performances, notably "Grug" and "Grug and the Rainbow." These productions brought Grug to life through innovative puppetry and design, captivating audiences both in Australia and internationally. The inclusion of puppets from these performances in the exhibition provides a tangible connection between the literary and theatrical representations of Grug.
The exhibition features original illustrations, manuscripts, and a selection of puppets used in Windmill's productions, offering insight into the creative processes behind both the books and the plays. By showcasing these elements, the "Grug Retrospective" not only honors Ted Prior's contribution to children's literature but also celebrates the innovative storytelling that has allowed Grug to remain a cherished figure across generations. This exhibition invites audiences to rediscover Grug's adventures and appreciate the enduring appeal of this iconic Australian character.
